El Dorado County Youth Commission
The El Dorado County Youth Commission (YC) works alongside the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors to ensure the voice of today's youth are heard. The YC is operated through the University of California Cooperative Extension 4-H Youth Development Program in coordination with the El Dorado County Board of Supervisor. The YC meets weekly, the first and third Thursday of the month in committee session, and the second and the fourth Tuesday of the month in board session during the school calendar year. (With the exception of late November and December). The YC representing youthfrom all geographic areas of the county first assembles at the fall retreat September 12-14, 2008 to do team building and initiate plans for the upcoming year. Following the retreat the regularly scheduled calendar of committee and board meetings begin. You(th) from the community are encouraged to come to learn how to take action! If the you(th) decides to participate on a regular basis through committee work with the YC, then you(th) must enroll in the 4-H Youth Development Program. For more information on how to be involved or enroll, call Christine at 621-5503.
What makes the YC work?
The YC functions under the direction of University of California Cooperative Extension in coordination with the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors. The YC Director, Carol Martin, 4-H Program Representative, acting with the assistance of 4-H Community Outreach Leaders, Liz White and Sandy Martin work to coordinate and mange the efforts of the YC. The composition of agency partners and adult 4-H Youth Development volunteers in El Dorado County through a unified commitment are dedicated to provide leadership for youth interested in taking action in the community. Youth involvement in the community is one of the most fundamental functions leading to youth civic engagement. Thus, a collaborative effort of local agency staff and 4-H adult volunteers ensure youth receive the right information to become decision makers in their local community. Extension programs are built upon a foundation of volunteer leaders. The YC is looking to expand the pool of local agencies and adult 4-H volunteers interested in working directly with the youth participating to take community action through committee work of the YC. If your agency or you as an active adult in your community are interested in this opportunity to make a difference for youth, to learn more, please contact Christine at 621-5503.
