The Master Food Preserver (
What do
Ø Assist
food preservation telephone and walk-in inquiries.
Ø Work in the community as local food preservation
resources.
Ø Staff information booths and put on food
preservation demonstrations at the El Dorado
County Fair and local festivals.
Ø Teach classes throughout the summer on food
preservation topics at the Extension office.
Who can be a Master Food Preserver?
Anyone who has an interest in Food Preservation and food safety can be a Master Food Preserver. The 40-hour certification classes are given during the day at the beginning of each year. Students must pass a written examination and agree to 40 hours of volunteer work per year.
Ø Approximately 40 hours of training on all aspects
of food preservation, including food safety,
canning, freezing, drying, pickling, and preparing
jams and jellies.
Ø Current Extension food preservation publications
and materials
Ø Hands-on lab experiences.
Ø Attend all trainings and lab sessions
Ø Complete weekly homework assignments and
quizzes during the eight week training course.
Ø Pass a final examination.
Ø Volunteer a minimum of 40 hours per year.
